Homesteading is a modern way of life. It is a self-sufficient way of living an autonomous lifestyle, with either minimal help from others or its family working together, each doing their part to survive challenging times. It involves raising livestock, processing meat, growing food, storing food, canning, dehydration, freeze-drying, natural remedies, herbs, fresh produce, and so much more. Homesteading saves money, provides hormone free/chemical free, safe food, and offers natural remedies from nature.

We really enjoy homesteading on our farm. It provides for our family, we know where our food comes from and what is in it. We enjoy our fresh produce, farm fresh eggs, and meat all year round. Any extra is sold to family and friends. Being self-sufficient not only provides for us, but it also keeps us active and provides an independent, eco-friendly way of life, reducing reliance on store-bought groceries and ensuring access to fresh, healthy foods.

Financial savings are just as important as safe food. Homesteaders significantly reduce household expenses, especially on food and energy costs, if they utilize renewable resources, dehydration, and freeze drying. Homesteaders can sell produce grown from their gardens, farm fresh eggs, meat, local raw honey, homemade jellies/jams, cottage foods (pies, cakes, cookies, breads, bars,…), homemade crafting items (rolling pins, cutting boards, stove boards, paper towel holders, coasters, furniture,…), and display these things in a roadside stand or store front on the farm. There are so many ways to create an income and enjoy farm fresh foods for your family.

Homesteading doesn’t require a college degree, only learned skills. Anyone can be a homesteader. If you have land to grow a garden or raise livestock, a talent to bake or cook, or a unique crafting skill, you can create a homestead that is right for you.

If you want to do something specific, there are resources everywhere for you to learn new skills and talents such as YouTube, extension offices, other homesteaders willing to mentor you, farmers, agricultural organizations, and so on. Do your research to see what you can find.
